Three memories of Barcelona: midnight jasmine, a summer terrace, a sun-soaked garden. Try all three scents and find yours.
Inside is 1ml of each scent in a glass roller bottle. Don't be fooled by the size - perfume oils are far more concentrated than alcohol sprays, and each 1ml sample lasts around 25+ applications (2-3 weeks of daily use). The entire Experience Pack gives you 6-9 weeks to find your favourite.
These mini roller bottles are small enough to live in your bag, pocket, or even a large wallet, so re-application becomes effortless wherever you are.
3 x 1ml of:
1. Mitjanit, Horta-Guinardó (Midnight, Horta-Guinardó): A jasmine and honeysuckle perfume, inspired by nighttime strolls in Barcelona's hillside neighbourhood of Horta-Guinardó.
2. Juliol a Gràcia (July in Gràcia): A citrus and floral-green blend, created based on an afternoon spent on a friend's terrace in July.
3. El Jardí de Sant Pau (Sant Pau's Garden): A citrus, herbal scent, with subtle salinity, named after a sun-soaked Mediterranean garden in Barcelona.
Recyclable packaging: Designed to fit through your letterbox - so it's there waiting for you when you get home.
More about the scents:
Each scent is based on one of my memories from my years living in Barcelona, and named in Catalan after an area in Barcelona.
Mitjanit, Horta-Guinardó
A midnight stroll through Horta-Guinardó, night-blooming jasmine trailing down a garden wall and honeysuckle lingering in the evening air. Sun-kissed skin still warm from a day at the beach...
Mitjanit, Horta-Guinardó (Midnight, Horta-Guinardó): Natural, vegan perfume oil, handmade in London
The Place: Horta-Guinardó, a hillside neighbourhood in Barcelona
My Story: While living in Horta-Guinardó, I took my dog Benito out on many a nighttime walk, and my favourite walks were always summer evenings when I could smell jasmine in the air. So I made this perfume to capture my memory.
Notes: Jasmine, honeysuckle, benzoin (a plant resin with vanillic warmth)
Hero ingredient: Hexane-free, organically extracted honeysuckle absolute (the one I chose comes from Italy)
Botanical notes: Each full-size bottle contains around 6,000 jasmine blossoms.
Juliol a Gràcia
A summer afternoon on a terrace in the village-like neighourhood of Gràcia. A slice of orange in a drink, the scent of the wooden table in the sun, and a pot of geraniums blooming in the corner...
The Perfume: Juliol a Gràcia (July in Gracia): Natural, vegan perfume oil, handmade in London
The Place: Gràcia, the most charming former village, now part of the city of Barcelona
My Story: While living in Gràcia, some friends invited me over for drinks on their terrace. We spent a lazy July afternoon drinking as the sun slipped across the sky, and I bottled the memory into this perfume.
Notes: Bergamot, orange, geranium bourbon (fresh, leafy-rose), and woody Cypress, with a touch of a sea breeze (sea fennel)
Hero ingredient: Sea fennel (also called rock samphire), a precious essential oil that gives a touch of salinity and a hint of a sea breeze. The variety I selected comes from Greece, and inspired the sketch I drew of sea fennel in Mariesme's logo and packaging
Botanical notes: My Cypress comes from Spain; its botanical name, sempervirens, means "ever-living" and in aromatherapy is believed to be calming and grounding.
El Jardí de Sant Pau
A summer's stroll through a Mediterranean garden: woody, herbaceous greenery, a hint of citrus in the air, and a sea breeze that dances through the trees...
The Perfume: El Jardí de Sant Pau (St Paul's Garden): Natural, vegan perfume oil, handmade in London
The Place: The gardens of my favourite place in Barcelona, the stunningly beautiful, UNESCO World Heritage listed El Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau
My Story: While living near El Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau (a former hospital turned museum; built in the beautiful Modernista architecture style, it is one of nine UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city), I visited the museum's grounds and gardens, and never forgot the scent of their orange groves - so I made it into this perfume.
Notes: Orange, mandarin, bergamot, petitgrain (woody and green), laurel (herbaceous), with a touch of neroli and a whisper of sea fennel, a plant which grows on the coast (I sourced mine from Greece and I sketched it to create the sketch for Mariesme's logo and packaging)
Hero ingredient: Neroli, a precious essential oil extracted from orange blossoms (with a clean, slightly green and herbal citrus scent); the one I chose is from Italy
Botanical notes: Neroli is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world; orange blossoms are hand-picked and it takes 1,000 pounds of flowers to make make one pound of oil.

Ethics & sustainability
Vegan & Cruelty-Free
As a vegan since 2008, it was important to me to design Mariesme to be vegan and cruelty-free from the ground up. Absolutely everything is vegan, down to using vegan adhesive on the labels and vegan ink for the stamps.
Mariesme does not test products on animals or commission any animal testing of products. All ingredients are sourced from suppliers who state that they do not conduct or commission animal testing.
No synthetics or petroleum derivatives
Unlike most commercial brands of perfume, which use synthetic fragrance (95% of which are petroleum-derived and which are as damaging for coral reefs as sunscreen), I use only 100% natural, plant ingredients. No synthetics and no petroleum-derived fragrance, ever.
Biodegradable & ocean-safe
Since I use only plant materials, the perfume's ingredients are ocean-safe and naturally biodegradable.
Low waste by design
Traditional perfumery spends up to 10x more on packaging than ingredients. I flipped that on its head and put the money where it matters - the perfume itself. I use a minimum of packaging to keep the perfume safe.
All perfumes are in recyclable glass bottles and I run a bottle reuse scheme in the UK. All shipping materials are made of recyclable or compostable materials and are mainly recycled paper.
Sourcing
I work with small, ethical suppliers where possible (for example most of my ingredients come from a family-run business in Wales and most packaging from a Lancashire-based family business specialising in sustainable paper products that's been around since 1991).
How to use
Apply to pulse points. Do not apply to broken skin. For best results, apply to moisturised skin (do not rub), and let it sink in.
Wear alone or layer with your favourite perfume to create a unique scent.
Store in a cool, dark place.
The ritual
Natural perfume invites a different relationship with scent: it evolves throughout the day and with you.
Roll onto pulse points and take a moment to inhale. Re-apply throughout the day as desired.
The samples are small enough to live in your bag, pocket, or wallet, so re-application becomes effortless wherever you are.
Longevity tips
Natural perfume oils are by nature individual - perfume oils bond to your skin and the scent varies by person, making them wonderfully personalised. The scent also evolves over time.
How long it lasts depends on your skin (dry skin absorbs the oil and therefore scent fades faster, whereas oilier or well-moisturised skin holds the scent longer), your activity level, and even the weather and moisture in the air.
One of the beautiful parts of natural perfume is that it's a very "personal" scent - as well as adapting to your skin, it tends not to project as much as conventional synthetic perfumes (which can often overpower strangers in crowded places) - instead it's meant to smelled just by you, and anyone lucky enough to get close to you.
If you'd like to make it last longer, I suggest applying it to well-moisturised skin, on your pulse points (e.g. wrists, sides and base of neck, inner elbows, behind ears) and then dabbing with your clothing (scarf, sleeves etc) - ONLY if you're wearing clothes that won't be damaged by oil - as natural scents can linger 24-48 hours or even longer on fabrics.
How long will a bottle last?
Perfume oils are potent and the same amount of liquid tends to last double or triple the same amount of alcohol perfume spray.
These samples are small but mighty. Each 1ml sample lasts around 25+ applications (2-3 weeks of daily use). The entire Experience Pack gives you 6-9 weeks to find your favourite.
